Research on the actual status of Intercultural Garden initiatives in Japan

We investigated the current status and role of intercultural gardens in Japan, highlighting their importance in promoting multicultural coexistence amidst a growing foreign resident population. This research aimed to provide a basis for future discourse and action towards a sustainable future for IGs in Japan. We examined case studies from Kariya, Chiryu, and Toyota Cities in Aichi Prefecture and Nagata Ward in Kobe City, focusing on areas with significant numbers of foreign workers. The results showed that IGs facilitate regional diversity and intercultural exchange. Collaboration with local organizations, resource recycling initiatives, and opportunities for multicultural interaction are seen as essential to ensure the sustainability and development of these community spaces.

Utilizing a top predator to prioritize site protection for biodiversity conservation

Ongoing global change makes it ever more urgent to find creative solutions for biodiversity preservation, but prioritizing sites for protection can be challenging. One shortcut lies in mapping the habitat requirements of well-established biodiversity indicators, such as top predators, to identify high-biodiversity sites. Here, we planned site protection for biodiversity conservation by developing a multi-scale species distribution model (SDM) for the raptorial Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis; goshawk) breeding in an extensive megacity region of Japan. Specifically, we: (1) examined the determinants of top predator occurrence and thus of high-biodiversity value in this megacity setting, (2) identified the biodiversity hotspots, (3) validated whether they actually held higher biodiversity through an independent dataset, and (4) evaluated their current protection by environmental laws. The SDM revealed that goshawks preferred secluded sites far from roads, with abundant forest within a 100 m radius and extensive forest ecotones suitable for hunting within a 900 m radius. This multi-scale landscape configuration was independently confirmed to hold higher biodiversity, yet covered only 3.2% of the study area, with only 44.0% of these sites legally protected. Thus, a rapid biodiversity assessment mediated by a top predator quickly highlighted: (1) the poor development of biodiversity-friendly urban planning in this megacity complex, an aspect overlooked for decades of rapid urban sprawl, and (2) the extreme urgency of extending legal protection to the sites missed by the current protected area network. Exigent biodiversity indicators, such as top predators, could be employed in the early or late stages of anthropogenic impacts in order to proactively incorporate biodiversity protection into planning or flag key biodiversity relics. Our results confirm and validate the applied reliability of top predatory species as biodiversity conservation tools.

Breeding habitat selection of the Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus at the nest and territory scale

The Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus has expanded its breeding distribution in recent years and now breeds in Japan, previously only part of its wintering range. We analyzed the breeding habitat selection of the population at the nest and territory scale in the Kirigamine Highlands, Nagano, Central Japan. At the nesting scale, the birds chose buildings frequently occupied by humans, while at the territory scale, they avoided sites in larger built-up areas. Our findings demonstrate that the breeding habitat selection of Daurian Redstart is influenced by environmental factors at both nest and territory scales.

From Walking for Health to Building Sustainable Cities

The shift from automobile-oriented cities to walkable, people-centered cities is underway around the world. In the early 2000s, the Walkable Index was proposed, and many studies have been conducted on the walkability of cities. Many studies have proven that walking has various effects on human health. Increasingly severe global environmental problems and the spread of COVID-19 since the end of 2019 are pushing this urban transformation forward rapidly, moving us toward the construction of integrated sustainable cities on a human scale, such as 15-minute cities. I would like to give an overview of what kind of debate has been going on in the world from the end of the 1990s to the present from the perspective of walking.

Unmanned aerial vehicles as a useful tool for investigating animal movements

Determining animal abundance is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of management measures against pest animals. Meanwhile, investigating animal movements has become important for conducting abundance estimations of unmarked animals since the random encounter model (REM) was published. REM is a camera trapping method that derives animal density by using contact ratio between camera traps and targeted animals that randomly move at a certain speed in a given area. However, it requires an independent value, which is animal speed. For investigating animal speed, camera traps with video recording and GPS tagging are the commonly used tools. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are currently used in wildlife monitoring to investigate the abundance of target species. It is evaluated as a tool that is non-invasive and suitable for surveys in inaccessible landscapes. Considering these characteristics, we regarded a distant survey using this technology as suitable for investigating animal movements. Therefore, we proposed a method for estimating animal movements using UAVs and conducted a case study that aimed to investigate wild boars' movements. We collected 11 video samples that successfully followed the movements of wild boars from 26 UAV flights in total, and the average speed of their movements derived from all the samples was 1.54 km/24 hr. We found that issues can be improved, including species identification, video sample length, and animal behaviours or activity patterns. On the other hand, our method showed potential for applying to species with specific characteristics in their body size, shape or activity patterns. With improvements in the issues mentioned above, UAVs would become an alternative tool for investigating animal movements.

An economic value for ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction using paddy fields in the kasumitei open levee system

In this article, we examined the value of the traditional Japanese flood control measure that uses a discontinuous levee (kasumitei). By avoiding the use of flood-prone lowlands for inhabitation and allowing floodwater movement through the kasumitei, the cost of building damage can be reduced, and water supply to wetlands can be increased. The purpose of our study was to quantify flood damage cost reductions and the potential gains for wetland species as part of an ecosystem-based disaster reduction initiative. The study was conducted in the Amano River basin in central Japan. First, we applied a drainage model and calculated the flood damage cost reduction in the floodplain from an evaluation of inundation depth differences. As part of an analysis of potential wetness, we identified areas where 1 m of flooding was predicted in rice paddies near kasumitei. We also quantified a topographic wetness index, the ratio of lowlands, and the ratio of poorly drained soil types, all of which would be beneficial to wetland species. We also investigated land-use change in the area and the relevant financial support framework. The results showed that a simulated closed levee system causes greater inundation and exposure to residents, and the value of paddy areas near kasumitei was calculated to be 43,830 JPY/1000 m2/year at the maximum. Even though the paddies tend to be poorly drained, these areas have been continuously used as paddies for the past century even under development pressure. The economic value and habitat potential of kasumitei levee systems have not been considered as part of any previous flood-management policies. We propose these existing flood control areas to be considered in the financial support framework in the context of river basin and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction management.

I am researching the Aso region to clarify the multilayered area of the regional circular and ecological sphere and the method for its construction. The largest area is the basin of six class A rivers flowing down from the Aso region as a regional circular and ecological sphere. Approximately two million people live in this basin, and 2.3 million people in the Fukuoka metropolitan area also use its water resource. The population of the Aso area, which is the source of the water, is about 210,000, and it is estimated that the population will be reduced by half by 2050. In the Aso area, there are more than 20,000 hectares of semi-natural grasslands, which play a significant role as a groundwater recharge area. The area of the grasslands is decreasing year by year due to the aging of the people involved in maintaining and managing them, and it is predicted that more than half of the grasslands will be lost by 2050 compared to 2003. To halt the decline in grassland areas, it is necessary to reduce the amount of labor required for burning at the end of winter.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the General Public in Urban and Rural Areas in Southern Japan

Urban and rural areas are situated in contrasting physical and social settings, which influence their levels of exposure as well as their preventive behaviors in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The study investigated whether there were differences between the areas regarding the levels of difficulty and anxiety felt by the general public during the first wave of COVID-19 in April and May 2020. We conducted an online questionnaire in Fukuoka and Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan via a private research company and collected a total of 913 valid responses from individuals whose conditions of employment were affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Although urban areas experienced higher case rates compared to rural areas, ordinal logistic regression analysis revealed no significant differences between urban and rural respondents concerning the level of difficulty in routine life. The daily-life contents which made them feel difficult during the first wave also did not differ largely between the contrasting areas. Urban respondents appeared to have experienced a higher level of difficulty in finding an alternative job, but how respondents found one, if successful, did not differ between urban and rural areas. The area of residence played a role in explaining the level of anxiety toward being infected, especially when the anxiety-related questions involved relationships with neighbors. Rural respondents showed a significantly higher level of anxiety toward causing neighbors trouble and being criticized if infected. Respondents who were better embedded in their communities generally felt more anxious about being infected, regardless of whether they lived in urban or rural areas. Women and respondents with children were more likely affected by abnormal situations caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Our study highlights the prevailing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the general public regardless of whether in urban or rural settings, as well as the potential contribution of social ties among people to protecting communities from infectious pathogens.

Because of COVID-19, our life, including the use of an urban park, drastically changed while we spend time with stay-at-home style. This study aims to find the characteristics of urban park usage during the COVID-19 crisis. We conducted observational surveys in five parks for three months. We revealed how the park use changed due to the opening of playground equipment following the lifting of the state of emergency. We found the demand for the park increased under the state of emergency and the difference in children’s park use between the situation in the emergency state and that in usual. We should reconsider the management of park during the state of emergency based on research.

Hotspots of Agricultural Ecosystem Services and Farmland Biodiversity Overlap with Areas at Risk of Land Abandonment in Japan

Agriculture provides a wide range of ecosystem services and has the potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation. In Japan, many of the resources associated with agroecosystems are threatened by farmland abandonment. Identifying where and to what extent agricultural ecosystem services and farmland biodiversity are affected by farmland abandonment is essential for developing effective strategies to counter the potential loss of these services and the biological communities that support them. Our study aimed to examine how a set of indicators for ecosystem services and biodiversity linked to agroecosystems (proportions of land dedicated to rice production and other agricultural production, proportion of agricultural land on slopes potentially providing landscape aesthetics, proportion of villages promoting rural tourism, and densities of forest edges and irrigation ponds in agricultural land) are distributed at the municipal level across the Japanese Archipelago, and to analyze their spatial patterns in relation to the distribution of farmland abandonment. It was hypothesized that hotspots of agricultural ecosystem services and farmland biodiversity occur in areas at risk of farmland abandonment owing to shared drivers. The cluster analysis identified four distinct ecosystem service bundle types, two of them representing areas specializing in agricultural production, while the other two provided high levels of cultural services and habitats for diverse biological communities. The latter two bundles were located in hilly and mountainous areas and accounted for 58% of rice production, 27% of other agricultural production, 77% of landscape aesthetics, 77% of rural tourism, 64% of forest edges, and 87% of irrigation ponds in Japan. In support of the hypothesis, farmland abandonment was pronounced in these areas, with 64% of recently abandoned fields located where 44% of agricultural land was found. This spatial overlap suggests that substantial losses of ecosystem services and biodiversity may occur if current patterns of farmland abandonment continue. In order to prevent large-scale losses of agricultural ecosystem services and farmland biodiversity, measures to counteract the ongoing abandonment trends should prioritize hilly and mountainous areas, and future studies should further evaluate the multiple functions of agricultural areas to improve policies that aim to ensure sustainable development of rural areas in Japan.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE REPRODUCTIVE RATE OF URBAN NORTHERN GOSHAWKS

Urbanization has increased with human population growth and the responses from raptor species are gaining more attention from both researchers and the public. Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) now breed in urban areas in Japan and Europe; however, there are few studies examining the factors that influence their reproductive rate in urban areas. We investigated the reproductive rate (number of fledglings per nest) of the Northern Goshawk population in an urbanized area of Japan from 2014 to 2016, and used a binomial mixture model to examine the relationship between the number of fledglings per nest and environmental factors such as nesting and foraging environments, anthropogenic disturbance, predation risk, and intraspecific competition. The goshawk nesting success rate from 2014 to 2016 was 71.6%, with an average reproductive rate of 1.7 fledglings per occupied nest. The percentage of canopy cover of nesting stands had a significant positive effect on fledgling numbers, and the number of adjacent occupied nests had a significant negative effect on fledgling numbers. The positive effects of canopy coverage may be explained by the protection offered by canopy against direct sunlight, wind, and rain. The negative effect of the adjacent occupied nests may result from an increase in the amount of time and energy goshawks spent in territory defense, and a decrease in available foraging habitat due to intraspecific competition.

Predicting the distribution of released Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) in central Japan

The Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) is one of the species threatened by mainly anthropogenic factor and their habitats are considered to be conserved. The first reintroduction of the species in Japan occurred in 2005. But as the species' natural wetland habitats are declining, the birds now prefer to forage in rice paddies. Thus, restoring the paddy-dominated landscape is key for further success in the reintroduction program. In addition, a quantitative method is urgently needed to assess how much suitable habitat is available and where it is located. In this study, we identified environmental factors that affect the distribution of the Oriental White Stork and produced the first predictive spatial distribution map using 2-year satellite tracking data of reintroduced individuals. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) approach was used to model the species' distribution at the landscape scale (1 kmx1 km grid cells). We identified six relevant environmental variables. Our results highlight the proportion of area of rice paddies as alternative wetland habitat as the most influential variable affecting the distribution positively. Landscape diversity represented by a complex mosaic of paddies and forest is also important for the species, as total length of paddy-forest edge also had a positive effect on habitat suitability. Our predictive distribution map cannot entirely provide distribution; however, it may be valuable information when considering where should be conserved as habitat to maintain the Oriental White Stork population in Japan.

A Century of Land-use Changes and Economic Damage in Kesennuma City Caused by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck off northeastern Japan on 11 March 2011. The subsequent tsunami wrought destruction on a massive scale. Kesennuma City was one of the most heavily damaged regions in Miyagi Prefecture, where more than 1000 people were killed by the tsunami and resulting fire; 215 people are still missing. Here we analyzed historical landuse changes in the tsunami-affected area of Kesennuma city center, Miyagi Prefecture, using topographic maps from 1913 and 1952 and vegetation maps from 1979 and 2011. The area consisted of 7.3% urban land use, 10.5% dry field, 55.5% rice paddy field, 4.7% wetland, 0.3% grassland, 5.3% forest, and 16.3% water body in 1913 and 76.1% urban land use, 1.7% dry field, 17.9% rice paddy field, 0.9% wetland, 1.6% forest, and 1.6% water body in 2011. During the period, the area of urban land use increased more than 10-fold, while that of rice paddy field sharply decreased from 55.5% to 17.9%. The 77 Bank estimated that the total economic damage in Kesennuma City was 232.4 billion yen, representing annual production value of all companies located in the damaged area. Our calculations for urban land use, dry field, and rice paddy field showed losses of 112.7 billion yen and 69 million yen due to the tsunami in the areas of urban and agricultural land use, respectively.

We examined the diet of young Northern Goshawks Accipiter gentilis before and after fledging through the direct observation of prey items delivered by a single pair breeding in central Tokyo. Observations were conducted from 13 May to 14 August 2015. Three hundred prey items primarily belonging to five bird species and two genera of mammals were recorded both before and after fledging. The species contributing most to the total diet were White-cheeked Starling Spodiopsar cineraceus and Feral Pigeon Columba livia, with pigeons contributing most to total biomass followed by White-cheeked Starling. Prey item composition differed between the periods before and after fledging. After fledging, the contribution of White-cheeked Starling to the diet decreased, whereas that of pigeon increased.

Underuse of social-ecological systems: A research agenda for addressing challenges to biocultural diversity

Conservation is often operationalized as a minimization of human intervention in nature. However, many social-ecological systems depend on human interventions to maintain characteristics of biological diversity. Therefore, reduced use or full abandonment of such systems can diminish rather than enhance biological diversity and its related cultural diversity (biocultural diversity). We link the definition of “underuse” with the extinction rate used in the planetary boundaries framework to support a more objective use of the term. We execute a structured cross-continental review of underuse in social-ecological systems of regions that contain more affluent countries to frame a global research agenda on underuse. Our working approach delineates causes, consequences, and strategies concerning underuse. Based on this comparative review, we identify causes of underuse that are similar in different continents, including globalization, and demographic or structural change in Europe, Japan and Oceania. Conservation paradigms emphasizing wilderness ideals in policies are characteristic of underuse in North America, whereas post-socialist transformation processes characterize underuse in Eastern Europe. Land abandonment and de-intensification of use are a common result, particularly in marginal and protected areas. Consequences of the loss of biocultural diversity include the loss of ecosystem services, traditional knowledge, or landscape amenities. We identified a pervasive gap in transcontinental comparative research that stymies the development of effective strategies to reduce underuse of biological diversity and thereby maintain related cultural diversity. We advocate for a global research agenda on governance approaches that address the challenges of underuse. Within this agenda, we emphasize the need for an international cross-case synthesis and a trans-continental mapping of state and civil society-based interventions and co-management approaches to re-establish humans as parts of ecological systems. Such comparative work on best practice cases in a real-world context should enhance adaptive management of biocultural diversity and prevent extinction caused by underuse. Thus, this innovative connection between underuse and the planetary boundary extinction rate, along with our new global research agenda on underuse, should initiate much needed support for policy makers and natural resource managers who must decide on appropriate types and levels of human intervention to implement, both inside and outside of protected areas.

FACTORS AFFECTING BREEDING-SITE SELECTION OF NORTHERN GOSHAWKS AT TWO SPATIAL SCALES IN URBANIZED AREAS

We determined breeding-site selection of Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) by comparing 33 breeding sites to 40 nonbreeding sites at the small (nest tree and vegetation structure within an 11.3-m radius of the nest) and the large scale (biomass of prey species and landscape structure within a 500-m radius from the nest) in the urbanized area of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Goshawks selected primarily Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) trees over 50-cm diameter at breast height (DBH) as nest trees. Trees smaller than 35-cm DBH were avoided. We used univariate logistic regression to assess vegetation structure of the nesting area. At the small scale, canopy trees in the nest plots were larger and taller, with more canopy cover, than those in non-nesting plots, and nests were farther from human habitations. In addition, nest plots had fewer understory trees than non-nest plots. In multivariate logistic regression, the DBH of canopy trees, number of understory trees, and distance to human habitation were highest in importance. At the large scale, nest plots had a greater percentage of forest area, smaller percentage of built area, more forest edge facing open land, and more forest edge facing PCDRS (parks, cemeteries, developed land, recreational fields, and small-scale vegetated areas <0.01 km(2) in a matrix of >= 30% residential areas). In the multivariate model, the length of forest edge facing open land and the percentage of built area were of highest importance.

This survey monitored the quantity and distribution of egg clutches of Tohoku salamander (Hynobius lichenatus) in the tsunami inundated lowland area from the period 2012 to 2015, looking at the case of Moune district, Kesennuma city, Miyagi prefecture, Japan. After the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, lowland area almost changed into wetlands by erosion and land subsidence, and seawater ran into a part of the lowland. Lots of egg clutches were found in the whole area in 2012. However several egg clutches deposited in brackish-water were dead. After 2013, the number of egg clutches declined, and the distribution moved inland. The number of egg clutches roughly increased in 2015, indicating the meta-population of Tohoku salamander's resilience against temporary disturbance caused by the tsunami. Models of relations analyzed between the numbers of egg clutches in each year showed larger population had higher resilience and the numbers of dead egg clutches had negative correlation to the total numbers of egg clutches in late years. Results indicated that the environmental changes after the tsunami had more severe impacts on the population's survival. However the population of Tohoku salamander had resilience under the natural state. This resilience may be weakened by man-made induced environmental changes and habitat loss from the tsunami recovery and reconstruction works. Hence, the need for conservation and monitoring was suggested.

Based on the survey data from 190 affected residents from Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines, we explored (1) how the disaster changed the people's social connections, and (2) how their trusts in various social actors contribute to their response to the disaster. Comparing the identified engagements before, during and after the disaster, we found (1) contact with their family, neighbor and relatives, are consistently present throughout the three phases of the disaster; (2) these changes were possible due to fatality and disappearances, the presence of emergent groups, change of residence, and perception of the disaster as a shared experience; and (3) there is stronger trust in their connections with relatives after the disaster. We concluded that the disaster impacts the interactions and contact with the different social actors in their network.

2011年3月11日に発生した東日本大震災から5年を迎えようとしている。政府が集中復興期間と定めた5年間が終了する。筆者は首都圏に在住であるが，最近はめっきり東日本大震災の被災地の話題に触れることが少なくなった印象を持っている。その理由の一つは2020年に開催予定の東京オリンピック・パラリンピックの話題が良い意味でも悪い意味でも増えていること，もう一つ2011年以降も日本では人的な被害を伴う災害が頻発していることではないかと考えている。被災者以外にとって確実に震災は過去になりつつある。被災地では復興は着実に進んでいるのだろうか。本論で主に扱う防災集団移転促進事業(以下防集)を見てみよう。宮城県の2016年1月12日時点の発表によれば，宮城県には12市町の195地区で防集が計画されていて，そのうち49地区で造成工事が完了している。残る146地区においてもすべて造成工事等に着手しているということである。完了した地区を時期ごとに見てみると，2013年度に終了していたのは，亘理町吉田南河原地区の1地区のみで，2014年度になると30地区で造成工事が完了した。既に完了しているものの多くの防集が被災から3年から4年かかったことになる。なお，これは造成工事の完了であるので，その移転地に住居を建てて移転するのは，それ以降になる。筆者は震災の1ヶ月後から気仙沼市に入り，様々な活動を行ってきているが，気仙沼市に関してみると最も早かったのが，大沢B地区で2015年1月末に完了している。気仙沼市では2014年度にさらに2地区完了し，2015年度に入りさらに6地区で完了した。後で紹介する舞根第2地区(以下では舞根地区と記載)は，2015年6月30日の完了であった。舞根地区では震災があった2011年3月末には被災した住民間で，高台移転の方針に合意していた。それから考えると実に4年3ヶ月以上の長い道のりであった。しかし，造成工事が完了している49地区はまだ恵まれているのかもしれない。宮城県では，まだ全体の4分の3の地区では完了しておらず，多くの住民は不自由な仮設住宅での暮らしを続けている。とても順調に復興しているとは言えないだろう。筆者は，慶應義塾大学湘南藤沢キャンパスの教員・学生とともに宮城県気仙沼市において様々な復興支援プロジェクトに取り組んできた。その過程で気仙沼市の被災状況や外部からの復興支援のあり方などをまとめているので，それらの詳細はそちらを参照いただきたい。また，本論では特に気仙沼市舞根地区の防集を取り上げる。気仙沼市全体の防集については別途論考をまとめているので，参照いただければ幸いである。

Physical and cultural conditions are fundamental factors in creating the formation of a terraced agricultural landscape. Studying the formation of terraced landscape is essential in order to understand the interaction between human activities and the natural processes that can be used to strengthen the adaptive capability in response to climate change and environment control. Terraced agricultural landscape in Batukaru Mountain's slope was selected as one of major terraced rice landscapes in Bali. The spatial pattern distribution and characteristics of landscapes were investigated using geographical information system, and the indigenous knowledge mechanism behinds the sustainability was discussed physically and culturally. The results showed that the harmony between the vertical pattern of the landscape, shape of terrace, irrigation system and conservative vegetative landscape along the steep slope and high elevation has protected the landscape. The controlled irrigation system has assured water to flow from the top to the bottom and even to places that seem impossible to reach by natural river water. The intangible agricultural indigenous concept called Tri Hita Karana was adhered to in organizing the layout of landscape elements such as forest, temple, terraced paddy field, irrigation network, and settlement which will continue to affect the sustainability throughout years. 2015年は，本論で扱う農村地域，グリーンインフラストラクチャー(以下グリーンインフラ)，そして生態系を基盤とした災害リスクの低減(Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction; 以下Eco-DRR)というキーワードにとって，特筆すべき年になった。まず，新たな国土形成計画(全国計画)，国土利用計画(全国計画)，社会資本整備重点計画が2015年8月に閣議決定された。農村計画学会としては，特別委員会を2014年に設置し，国土形成計画(全国計画)の改定に向けて，パブリックコメントの提出，シンポジウムの開催などを行い，農村計画分野からの意見の表明を行った。この3つの計画では，グリーンインフラがたびたび取り上げられ，初めてグリーンインフラが日本の国土に関わる計画に記載された。時期は前後するが，2015年3月に第3回国連防災世界会議が仙台市で開催され，仙台防災枠組2015-2030の優先行動3の中にEco-DRRへの取り組みの推進が明示的に書き込まれた。加えて，2015年11月に閣議決定される予定の気候変動の影響への適応計画の案には，気候変動により高まることが予想される災害リスクに対し，工学的・生態学的手法，土地利用，社会的・制度的手法等の様々な手法を適切に組み合わせることの必要性が示され，Eco-DRRが国レベルの計画に位置づけられることになる。日本にとって2015年は，グリーンインフラ，Eco-DRR元年と言っても良いだろう。

The Himalaya holds the world record in terms of range and elevation. It is one of the most extensively glacierized regions in the world except the Polar Regions. The Himalaya is a region sensitive to climate change. Changes in the glacial regime are indicators of global climate changes. Since the second half of the last century, most Himalayan glaciers have melted due to climate change. These changes directly affected the changes of glacial lakes in the Himalayan region due to the glacier retreat. New glacial lakes are formed, and a number of them have expanded in the Everest region of the Himalayas. This paper focuses on the two glacial lakes which are Imja Lake, located at the southern slope, and Rongbuk Lake, located at the northern slope in the Mt. Everest region, Himalaya to present the spatio-temporal changes from 1976 to 2008. Topographical conditions between two lakes were different (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). Rongbuk Lake was located at 623 m higher than Imja Lake, and radiation of Rongbuk Lake was higher than the Imja Lake. Although size of Imja Lake was larger than the Rongbuk Lake in 2008, the growth speed of Rongbuk Lake was accelerating since 2000 and exceeds Imja Lake in 2000-2008. This trend of expansion of Rongbuk Lake is anticipated to be continued in the 21st century. Rongbuk Lake would be the biggest potential risk of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) at the Everest region of Himalaya in the future.

Biomass is a renewable energy source that is produced from living or recently living biological material. Vegetation type and biomass are considered important components that affect biosphere-atmosphere interactions. The ground assessment of biomass, however, has been found to be insufficient due to the limited spatial extent of surveys. This study aims to integrate field measurements with satellite remote sensing data for regional biomass mapping in Fujiyoshida City, Japan. Fujiyoshida City is situated on the northern slope of Mt. Fuji and includes a large area of forest land, named "Onshirin Forest". From 2011 to 2012, a field survey was conducted to calculate the biomass potential in situ as ground-truthed data. After fieldwork, ortho-rectified ALOS data with an AVNIR-2 scene (22 May 2008) was used to map the vegetation cover types. Japanese larch, Japanese red pine, mixed forest, other forest, grass, bare soil and roads, and buildings were identified using supervised classification. The total plant biomass was 163,252 tons. The biomass potential estimate from field measurements was extrapolated to the large forest area in Fujiyoshida City to estimate the potential plant biomass of specific vegetation cover types.

Urbanization has caused countless changes in the lives, behaviors, and community structures of wild animals. Habitat loss in urban areas has led to the proliferation of certain species over others; in the case of birds, frugivores and certain predators can be found in abundance in cities. These birds, however, occasionally show novel behaviors that can cause stress within human-wildlife interactions. The black kite, Milvus migrans, for example, has displayed a tendency to attack humans for their food in certain urban areas in Japan. In order to determine how habitat availability and land-use types affected these aggressive tendencies, field observations were combined with GIS analysis of five locations along Sagami Bay in Japan. The following locations were assessed according to the amount of each land-use type present and the aggressive tendencies of each location's black kite population: Enoshima, Fujisawa; Kamakura Beach, Kamakura; Zushi Beach, Zushi; Oiso Beach, Oiso; and Iwa Beach, Manazuru. The aggression of each population, designated by the log of the aggression index, was found to be significantly affected by the amount of forest area per black kite, the amount of non-rice-paddy agricultural area per black kite, and the season. Thus, aggression was higher amongst populations with less forested or agricultural area within their foraging zones, and aggression increased during spring, which is the breeding season.

The reed is a wetland vegetation which has ecological and economical values. Development of large-scale monitoring method of the reed is needed for effective habitat management. This research studies the reed of Xianghai wetland in China, and aims to construct four models to predict occurrence of the reed, height, stem diameter, and density, using the field measurement and satellite data. Based on predictive models and GIS, habitat conditions of reed in Xianghai Wetland at northeast China in 2010 was evaluated spatially. Habitat condition of reed and its important environmental variables are discussed.

The objective of this study is regional circulation of woody biomass. Taking account of the regional balance of supply and demand, this study aims to provide a utilization system to increase the use of woody biomass. The area designated for this study is Iwaki city and Kawauchi village of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The results are as follows. Judging from the supplied amount from the forest, approximately 40 times the amount of thermal energy from kerosene can be sustainably generated by using woody biomass. The pervasive eff ect on regional economy from the use of woody biomass can be estimated to be 13 hundred million yen in all and will make up 0.01% of Iwaki area's gross domestic production.

This study placed great importance on the understanding of city's structures in each the times, and I treated the historicity of Shizuoka through new ways of analysis. Although Shizuoka is a castle city was designed in the Edo period, many of the elements as a castle city have lost in various reasons. In urban planning, I shouldn't conclude that all historicity of castle cities originates from elements in Edo period, and we should discover the city's characters from urban structures in history and creations of ostensible characters are nonsense, for example the idea of rebuilding of a castle tower. Therefore, this study clarified changes of evaluations to the urban structure as to urban planning in center of Shizuoka city.

Regional Memory and Image before the Great East Japan Earthquake Narrated in Residents' Oral History:A Case Study in Moune, Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture

This study attempts to find out the regional memory and image shared by residents before the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. Oral histories were obtained by conducting interviews in a small community of Moune in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture from March through December, 2012. Two analyses, the correspondence analysis based on text mining and the spatial analysis using GIS, were applied to the oral histories of seventeen residents. The regional image and memory before the earthquake were thus extracted, which help local residents to plan and implement community-based reconstruction.

On March 11, 2011 a massive, magnitude 9.0 earthquake destroyed most of the rural areas along the Pacific Coast of eastern Japan, an area that had been facing issues of depopulation and aging even before the earthquake. In this paper I discuss reconstruction plans for depopulated rural areas from the perspectives of transportation infrastructure, residential areas, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, consensus building, and nature restoration. We must take a "backcasting" approach to sustainable development, one in which planning strategies lead to successful outcomes. An organizational and planning support platform is needed to build a consensus within an area. © 2012 International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences.

This study aimed to understand the quality of the green space in the reclaimed land of Tokyo bay area from the aspect of organisms. The method to sort the green space environment of reclaimed land on the artificial ground with ecological function has not been examined. In this research, we selected Orthoptera (grasshopper, katydid and grig) as an index organism because it is closely related to the structure of green space and expected to inhabit on artificially made land. Therefore, the biotope type of the seaside area was examined with the relation to the habitat of Orthoptera and to the environmental information of green coverage. In this investigation, we recorded the number of individuals and the species of Orthoptera at 72 sites such as the parks, greenbelts, and planted zones. The relationship between environmental information of green coverage and habitat information of Orthoptera was analyzed based on the green classified chart. We classified groups of Orthoptera by TWINSPAN and analyzed the relationships of individual number of Orthoptera groups with environmental factors, using GLMM. In the result, Orthoptera groups receives the influence about distribution of green coverage in the near area and the distance from existing habitat.

During the depopulation era, the revitalization of rural mountainous areas that continue to shrink is a pressing problem. Under this severe circumstance, it is an essential task for design rural management policy to clarify the mechanisms of development of a vigorous region and construct the support systems for these regions, meaning constructing promotional systems for endogenous development. In this research, we conducted a field survey at Shunran no Sato, where local residents tried to revitalize the village by farm-inn and urban-rural exchange, and to evaluate the significance of consensus building in local development. In this area, the local development was founded upon an agreement by only seven persons under a time pressure to build a consensus. Through consensus building, this area could achieve revitalization even though on the verge of extinction by remarkable depopulation by means of obtaining official support and having the cooperation of local residents. In this paper, we review the merits, demerits, conditions, and important points underlying a prompt action of a rural activation project based on partial agreement for the local, endogenous development. As a result, it was clear that, although partial consensus building prevented the residents and region from various potential losses, it did not prevent some conflicts, specifically those that occurred early in the program. However, the core organization was careful to avoid conflicts. Overall, the style of regional planning in this area was good in terms of avoiding a conflict in early stages and establishing an incentive design in its developing stages. However, we must beware this report's findings, because making light of consensus building corresponds to an abuse of a precautionary principle. As such, to accomplish partial consensus building for the prompt action toward local revitalization, it is necessary to first base the scenarios on rational basis that indicate that the area cannot avoid failing if residents don't agree.

Limited flood disaster information causes insufficient justification for public awareness, therefore, improving flood practice management is needed. This paper applies the flood forecasting model and atmospheric model to identify rainfall distribution and to investigate the threshold values for alert system. The entire system aims to improve flood monitoring, information distribution and an alert system. The geospatial web based system is established to facilitate public awareness by allocating information in timely manner without cumbersome software installation.The process to obtain rainfall and river discharge data, input and transfer data, through the database can be launched after other parameters i.e. elevation, soil, land cover, and basin boundary are set. The entire process takes approximately 15 minutes. The flood warning system and the geospatial web based system are connected to the database and promptly alert in the case of emergency.The yields prove promising results, based on the amount of time and viable function. The existing rainfall spatial based pattern, received from the atmospheric model, takes about 72 minutes to achieve one hourly image. It is a suitable model for observing regional rainfall distribution. It does not serve immediate alert purpose in the emergency situation due to it is too time consuming.

Identifying habitat patches and potential ecological corridors for remnant Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) populations in Japan

The Japanese National Biodiversity Strategy 2010 calls for the creation of ecological networks as a biodiversity conservation policy. However, there is an obvious lack of information on the spatial distribution of many species and a lack of scientific methods for examining habitat requirements to establish the need for constructing these networks for target species. This study presents a quantitative method for assessing the need for ecological networks through modeling the potential geographic distributions of species based on a case study of local populations of Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) in Fuji and Tanzawa, Japan. A total of 1541 point records of occurrences of Asiatic black bears and 11 potential predictors were analyzed in a GIS environment. After a predictive distributional map was obtained using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm, a gap analysis was carried out and population size was estimated. Approximately 24% of the bear's predicted habitat area fell within a wildlife protection area, 2% within a nature reserve, and 37% within natural parks. Conservation forest comprised 54% of the total area of predicted habitat; of this, national forest comprised 2%, and private and communal forest comprised 37%. The total estimated Asiatic black bear population in this region was 242, with 179 individuals in the Fuji local population, 26 in the Tanzawa local population, and 37 in the corridor patch between the two local populations. Our study also found a potential corridor connecting the Fuji and Tanzawa local populations, as well as potential habitat corridors in the Fuji region containing subpopulations on Mt. Fuji (119 individuals) and Mt. Kenashi (53 individuals). An additional subpopulation on Mt. Ashitaka (7 individuals) is isolated and not fully protected by a zoning plan. Mt. Furo's subpopulation is considered to be almost extinct, although black bears were observed here until 2002 based on the report by Mochizuki et al. (2005). The total black bear population of the Fuji-Tanzawa region is considered to be "endangered"; thus, an adequate population size might be difficult to maintain even if this region were to be internally connected by means of an ecological network. A predictive distributional model of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) is useful for the effective management of the species' habitat. Applicability of a previously developed model to the Tanzawa local bear population was examined. Three different types of animal presence data were collected for validation of the model. The overall rate of correct classification was 67%?85%, indicating that the model can be extrapolated to other local populations with acceptable transferability. Accuracy of the model's predictions differed depending on the data sampling design most likely as a result of bias in one of the sampling methods. The model tended to underestimate the actual presence of bears. We attribute this underestimation to 1) properties of the particular habitat used by the local Tanzawa population and 2) the model's greater ability to predict the habitat of mountain bears than that of Satoyama bears.

A study was conducted on Orthoptera (Acrididae, Tettigoniidae, Gryllidae) in 56 sites of reclaimed land of Kanazawa District, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture through May to October of 2008. 28 species and 1941 individuals were recorded during this study. By using TWINSPAN and partitioning, classifications of the Orthoptera and study sites were made based on the results of this study. Also we investigated concerning vegetation, soil, distance from original land,and area coverd with vagetation around field as environmental factors. The study sites were sorted into 5 groups and the Orthoptera were sorted into 4 groups by using TWINSPAN. Based on 5 study site groups, partitioning analysis was conducted.Results suggest vegetation height, coverings of evergreens and deciduous trees of middle to high height, and distance from original land are related to Orthoptera inhabitation. However, it has not been clearly understood the distance from original land was selected as explanatory variable. A further verification is necessary because of the possibility that area coverd with vegetation around the field is related was suggested.

Dragonfly and damselfly (Odonata) species were surveyed from May to October 2002 on 38 small irrigation ponds in the north part of Awaji Island. The investigation was conducted nine times on each pond. Totally 1568 individuals of 28 species were recorded for six months. We selected nine species recorded more than 40 individuals and analyzed the relationships of individual number of these species with environmental factors, including conductivity, NO2-, NO3-, NH4-, PO43-, COD, surrounding land uses within 50 meters from the edge of pond, the number of aquatic water plant species, and autocovariates explaining spatial autocorrelation, using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The result showed that NO3-, COD, surrounding grassland, woodland and the number of water plant species were critical factors for the distribution of some Odonata species.

種の保存とランドスケープ－21世紀における自然と人との共生のあり方を考える。2008年には「種の保存とランドスケープ」というテーマに関わる大きな出来事が3つあった。一つは生物多様性基本法が6月に施行されたこと、次は国土形成計画（全国計画）が7月に閣議決定されたこと、そして3つめは、9月にトキの試験放鳥が佐渡島で実施されたことである。この3つの出来事が2008年にそろったことは偶然とも言えるが、2001年の環境省の発足以降、2002年の自然再生推進法制定、自然公園法改正、鳥獣保護法改正、2004年の外来生物法制定、2006年に再びの鳥獣保護法の改正、そして2007年11月に第三次生物多様性国家戦略が策定されるなど、近年種の保存とランドスケープを結びつけるような施策が展開されている。歴史。

Habitat estimation of Asiatic black bear is considered highly significant from the perspective of effective habitat management, because this species is known both as a destructive animal as well as an umbrella species. In this study, we developed a predictive model for the probability of occurrences of Asiatic black bear using environmental indices. Based on this research, the optimal logistic regression model was log(p/(1-p))=(-1.486e+01)+(7.335e-04)*x1+(9.470e-03)*x2. where x1 is the distance to small paths (m), x2 is the altitude (m), and p is a probability of occurrence of Asiatic black bear in this study area. This model is applicable for habitat management. Additional research will examine the application of this model to different local Asiatic black bear populations in other regions.

Possibility of using chip-mulchings made from pruned branches and leaves in the parks

In this paper, we conducted a field experiment on a large park which is located on the north part of Awaji Island, central Japan, in order to verify effects of mulching of wood chips made from pruned braches and leaves on 39 cherry trees (Cerasus × Kanzakura 'kawazu-zakura'). 39 trees were divided into three groups: wood chips were laid around 14 trees after grass removed, sand was laid around 15 trees after grass removed, and 10 trees were treated as control. SPAD value, photosynthetic rates for tree growth, and soil temperature and moisture were measured from the beginning of August to the middle of November. As a result, the average of soil temperature of tress with wood chips was significantly lower than ones of trees with sand and control trees. The averages of soil moisture of trees with wood chips and sand were significantly higher than one of control trees. Also, trees with wood chips and sand had significant higher SPAD values than control. The photosynthesis rate of trees with wood chips was less reduced than the others. These results showed that the multing of wood chips could keep trees healthy, because of maintaining the soil temperature and moisture.

We investigated aquatic plant distribution and environmental factors in 38 irrigation ponds of four valleys of a terraced paddy field area in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan. Sixteen species including two threatened and two exotic species were recorded in 24 ponds, and no species in the other ponds. The average number of species per pond was 1.7 (range, 0 to 8). There were few ponds with more species.   Although species number was not related to location of ponds within each valley, it was significantly different among valleys. The results of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) also showed no trends in species composition of ponds between and within four valleys. However, significant nestedness of aquatic plant communities was detected using “BINMATNEST”, and the threatened species occurred in ponds with more species. The results of Moran's I statistics of the present/absent data of Lemna aoukikusa and Potamogeton oxyphyllus showed the significant positive spatial autocorrelation within valleys for only the former species, of which populations were observed in surrounding paddy fields.   We analyzed the relationships of species number with environmental factors, including conductivity, NO2-, NO3-, NH4+, PO43- and mean water level, using generalized linear models (GLMs). The model with the lowest AIC included conductivity, NO3- and mean water level, and the latter two variables had significant effects on species number. Adding autocovariate explaining spatial autocorrelation slightly improved model fit, but its significant effect was not found. Both NO3- and mean water level varied among valleys in different way from species number, indicating that only each of the variables do not explain the difference in species number among valleys. The final GLM models explained 27.5 % of the variation in species number, suggesting other environmental factors may also be important.   The results of this study suggest that active conservation efforts and water management are necessary in order to maintain the species richness of ponds in our study area. Considering the nestedness of aquatic plant communities and occurrence of threatened species in ponds with more species, conservation of those ponds should have priority. Controlling the exotic species should also be important and indispensable.

  Biotope (habitat) type maps are essential as base maps for land use planning and biodiversity conservation. Actual vegetation maps are often used as the base maps, though important information for biotope evaluation such as vegetation structure and anthropogenic land modification is not shown enough. We proposed a procedure of biotope type mapping for rural areas and drew a prototype map. We classified biotope types following German system of biotope classification in some part and also considering soil moisture of rice paddies in winter, bank modification of irrigation canals, vegetation management frequency in grasslands and density of woodland understory.

In this study, we tried selection the index species in frogs and toads, because it was necessary to verify the relation with the population density of the index species and the ecological location type in rural landscape planning. The fauna composition and seasonal changes in the number of frogs was investigated by visual encounter survey and audio strip survey in hilly area, northern Kanto in 2006. Two species, Rana japonica and R. porosa porosa, has been selected as the index species for evaluation of the habitat quality. And the evaluation by the calculation value of yearlings should be low validity, and use the calculation value of adults. The suitable investigation season of two species for quantitative survey was clarified. In addition, it was shown that the presence of R. rugosa was able to become indices of various frog species composition when limiting it to the environment where the rice field existed.

We proposed a new consensus building method in a scene design of rural area, which consists of workshops involving pablic and image questionnaire by computer graphics (CG) to residents. The procedure is; 1) preliminary questionaire in a workshop to draw CG images, 2) image questionnaire to all residents in an area and 3) final workshop to make decisions of plans. As a result most participants in the workshop accepted the results of image questionnaires and were satisfied with the process.

We digitized land uses in the latter Edo era in Awaji Island, central Japan, using old maps called Bugengunzu. Bugengunzu is one of the oldest map by a modern measurement method in Japan, which was drawn by Okazaki family working for the domain of Tokushima from 1802 to 1847. Two maps (approximately 1/18000) covered whole Awaji Island. A total area of woodland was 34,916 ha at that time. Compared with the area in 1980's, which was 34,729 ha, only 0.5 % of woodland disappeared in 150 years. Some woodlands changed into fields and plantations in 1960's in north and middle parts of the Island. On the other hand, some fields on the steep slop and at high altitude in south part were abandoned, then these areas changed into woodlands.

We analyzed changes in land use from 1963 to 2000 in the northern part of Awaji Island in central Japan, using topographical maps and aerial photographs. We compared these changes between two different irrigation systems: tazu, in which a community group jointly owns the rights to a water source, and private management. The study area consisted of 57.3% paddy field, 22.2% woodland, 7.2% urban land use, 6.3% grassland, 5.8% water body, and 1.2% dry field in 1963. In 2000, the area consisted of 44.3% paddy field, 21.0% woodland, 12.6% urban land use, 11.6% grassland, 5.3% water body, and 5.0% dry field. The proportion of agricultural use had decreased markedly over the 37-year period. In the tazu area, 38.1 and 37.7% of former paddy field had changed into urban land use and grassland, respectively, and 19.3% of former paddy field had become dry field by 2000. In contrast, 30.6% of former rice paddy had become dry field in the private management area. About half of the former rice paddy had changed into grassland (26.3%) and urban land use (24.0%) in the private area, and 18.6% had become woodland in 2000. In the tazu area, there were fewer abandoned fields, because farmers still manage their fields according to strict regulations. In the private management area, the set-aside or abandoned fields had changed into woodlands as a result of vegetation succession, because farmers had abandoned fields located far from their homes or on steep slopes. These results suggest that the irrigation system may influence the pattern of change in land use. © 2007 International Consortium of Landscape and Ecological Engineering and Springer.

It has been more than twenty years since biotope conservation in Germany was introduced to Japan. There have already been many examples of biotope restoration and creation in Japan. However, Japanese biotopes are almost limited to aquatic habitats like small ponds or streams and most planner and engineers just focus on creation of biotopes. I explained German biotope conservation system including biotope survey, map and plan. In Japan there are few views of biotope mapping and planning. We have to investigate many biotopes and species comprehensively in an area and draw a biotope map, then we can arrange a biotope plan. At last, I discussed problems of exotic species invasion and biodiversity conservation by ecological network planning.

I investigated birds from 15 January to 24 February 2004 along 8 wooded streets in central area of Osaka, Japan, in order to determine which environmental factors of wooded street are important as habitat of birds in winter. Eight species of 218 individuals were recorded at 2 times observation of the streets. I used a satellite image to identify the distribution of vegetation in my study area. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of each grid cell was calculated. The value of NDVI that indicated the threshold value for vegetation cover were 0.3 and more, based on the ground-truthing from December 2003 to February 2004. The proportion of vegetation cover within 50 m from a recording point was calculated in each bird species. The average vegetation cover proportion of Hypsipetes amaurotis and Sturnus cineraceus was more than 25 %, while that of Passer montanus was around 5 %. Almost all individuals of species except Passer montanus were significantly recorded in buffer areas within 100 m, 200 m, 300 m and 400 m from the edge of 2 ha and more woodlot.

Agricultural reservoirs are now regarded as important habitats for some aquatic organisms, though their value as habitats of algae has clarified little. Diatom is often the most dominant component of freshwater algal communities and its contribution to species diversity can not be negligible. We studied periphytic diatom assemblages in 24 agricultural reservoirs in Awajishima Island, Japan to find major factors controlling diatom species composition. As it has often been reported and discussed, influence of eutrophication to species composition was detected. However, surrounding land cover was estimated to be the most important factor: some dystrophic or soil diatoms characterized diatom assemblages in reservoirs surrounded by woodland. Compositional difference caused by substrate was not detected. It is concluded that water quality management considering eutrophication and land use management where conservation priority is put on woodlands surrounding reservoirs are possible means to conserve diatom assemblages in agricultural reservoirs.

The influence of the vegetation and surrounding land use on the bird distribution in the wintering season was analyzed in order to develop a method of ecological network planning in urban area. The bird distributions were surveyed by line transects method with mapping observed points from December 2002 to February 2003 in the west part of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Central Japan. The relationship between species and surrounding land uses of observed points was analyzed by Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The result showed it is necessary for the appearance of forest species that forest is the most dominant land use (over 50 %) in the surrounding area. Shrub and herb layers are also impotant for the appearence of some species.

ため池は本来の農業用水としての利用に加え, 近年では多様な生物を支える貴重な環境であることが指摘されている。また, 農業における管理作業は周辺の植物相に大きな影響を与えていると考えられる。そこで, 本研究では兵庫県北淡町のため池において, 農業における管理作業が植物相に与える影響について環境要因をとして明らかにすることを目的とした。管理については, 護岸の基質, 草刈り回数, 水位の変化, 環境要因に関しては, 気温, 水面の温度, 日射量, 土壌含水率, 植物相に関しては, 出現種および優占群落の調査を行った。その結果, 水位変化の影響を受けるため池周縁部下位で上位や提頂部と出現種が異なることがわかった。

Bird distributions in isolated woodlots and urban parks in an urban area were censused during a wintering season to identify the factors influencing the distribution of wintering birds. The study sites were located in Tokorozawa City, that is almost 30 km northwest of Tokyo and a typical residential city around Tokyo. The results showed that the bird species richness significantly correlated with only area covered by woods. Based on the species composition of birds, the study sites were classified into two types by Two Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). One type included all of the urban parks and two isolated woodlots (Type A), while the other group consisted of the other isolated woodlots (Type B). It appeared that the ratio of edge contacting with urban land use to all edge explained the separation of the two groups in the best manner. The location of the observed bird individuals indicated that several species showed tendency to prefer particular layers of vegetation: for example, Emberiza spodocephala and Corvus macrorhynchos tended to be in shrub layer and on upper crown, respectively. This observation suggested that vegetation structure also influenced bird distribution.

Multivariate analysis of ecological data has been applied to environmental analysis and evaluation. Recently, some ecologists reported that classification and regression trees (CART) are ideally suited for the analysis of complex ecological data. We use classification tree to analyze the relationship between avian species composition and habitat conditions from 37 study plots located in a riparian area of the Tama-gawa River, Tokyo. The data were comprised of census data of birds and vegetation structural information. First, the study plots were classified by TWINSPAN based on the avian species composition. Then, we tried to recover the grouping of the study plots by classification tree or canonical discriminant analysis using the vegetation structural information so that we could find the relationship between avian species composition and vegetation structure. Classification tree analysis performed almost as well as canonical discriminant analysis. Classification tree models explain variation of a single response variable (here, avian fauna type) by repeatedly splitting the study plots into more homogeneous groups, using combinations of explanatory variables (here, vegetation structural parameters). This structure is simple, suitable for dealing with high-order interactions, so that classification tree can give easily interpretable results. Finally, based on the comparison of classification tree and canonical discriminant analysis, we concluded that classification tree was more suitable than discriminant analysis for landscape evaluation and planning.

Water quality and fluctiation pattern in water level of 38 small irrigation ponds were investigated in Hokudan- cho, Hyogo Prefecture, West Japan. Temperature, water temperature, pH, electric conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), N02-, N03- NH4+, SiO2, PO43-, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and water level were surveyed in each pond from May 2002 to April 2003. The result showed that there was not so much difference in water condition of among ponds, because water is frequently pumped from a pond to another pond. The existence of water plants and polluted water from residences influenced water condition. The water level of most irrigation ponds fluctuated dramatically from spring to the end of summer.

Relationship between distribution of dragonfly species and environmental factors in small irrigation ponds in Hokudan-cho, Hyogo Prefecture

Dragonfly species were surveyed in 23 small irrigation ponds in Hokudan-cho, Hyogo Prefectre in order to detect environmental factors influencing dragonfly distribution. Thirty-two species and 1066 individuals were observed from May to October 2001. The number of dragonfly species had no significant relation with water body area of irrigation ponds. Twenty-three ponds were classified to three types by TWINSPAN (Two-way Indicator Species Analysis). The result showed that neighboring woodlots and frequency of cutting glass around pond influenced the component of dragonfly species. Cutting glass is one of the important maintenances of irrigation ponds. It was suggested that the disturbance by traditional farm works such as cutting glass plays an important role to maintain dragonfly species richness on this area.

The bird distribution was analyzed in the urban area of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, in order to develop evaluation methods of habitat suitability for ecological network planning. Bird communities were censused by point count method in twenty urban parks from December 1999 to February 2000. Based on the species composition of bird, twenty urban park were classified into four types by TWINSPAN (Two Ways INdicator SPecies ANalysis). The result of classification and regression trees showed that area of woods within urban park, ratio of woods within 500 m around urban park and vegetation cover density in shrub and herb layers (from 0.12 to 3 m) and tree layer (more than 9 m).

Factors Influencing the Distribution of Dragonflys (Odonata) in the Agricultural Landscape in Hokudan-cho, Hyogo Prefecture

There is a huge number of small irrigation ponds in the agricultural landscape of the north of Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. Recently, managements of many ponds have been abandoned. However, these ponds are used as habitat by many organisms. They have an important role to maintain biodiversity in this area. Dragonfly (Odonata) species were surveyed in 24 irrigation ponds in Hokudan-cho, the north of Awaji Island. Thirty-seven species were catched and/or observed from June to September 2000. The number of dragonfly species had no relation with water body area of irrigation ponds. Twenty-four ponds were classified to five types by TWINSPAN (Two-way Indicator Species Analysis). The classification of TWINSPAN was analyzed by Classification and Regression Trees using explanatory variables about environmental factors of irrigation ponds. The results showed that altitude, neighboring woodlots, water body area and water quality influenced the component of dragonfly species. Especially, it was important for species preferring edge and/or inside of woodlot that over 45 percents of pond surroundings were adjacent to woodlots. It was also suggested that surrounding land uses influenced the distribution of dragonfly species.

The objectie of this study is to propose a method for evaluating ecological network. We propose to consider two classes of spatial scales for evaluation. In the macro-scale research, we classified land use types by satellite data, and extracted two areas of heterogeneous or homogeneous land use in the object region In these areas, we performed micro-scale researches through field survey and geographical information based topographical maps. Throughout these researches of different spatial scales, we evaluated present ecological network and discussed the availability of this method.

1970年代にバイエルン州で初めて作製された生物空間地図は,その後ドイツの自然保護において,必要不可欠な資料として位置づけられ,ドイツ各地で作製されるようになった.地図作製手順には,当初から大きな変更がないものの,具体的な作業方法は大きな変化を遂げた.一般的だったカラー空中写真にかわり,最も重要な基礎資料として赤外カラー空中写真が利用されるようになった.地理情報システムの活用によって,情報はすべてデジタル化され,コンピュータ上で地図が作製されるようになった.本論では,最新の地図作製方法とその応用について紹介するとともに,我が国における生物空間地図を生かした生物多様性保全のあり方について検討した.

Bird communities on the II woodlots in a rural area near large cities were surveyed in wintering season from January to March 1995 to analyze the factors influencing the distribution of bird. Based on the species composition of bird, the woodlots were classified into three groups by TWINSPAN. The result showed that woodlot area is an important factor of the species composition. The ratios of edge with agricultural fields were significantly different between two woodlot groups. It was indicated that agricultural fields in the neighborhood influenced the species compositions of bird within woodlots. The necessary of buffer zones between agricultural field and woodlots against the invasion of agricultural bird species.

Relationship in Species Composition between Vegetation and Bird Communities in Remnant Woodlots on the Musashino Uplands and Sayama Hills

We studied relationships between compotion of bird community and vegetation types in woods on the Musashino Uplands and Sayama Hills. One hundred study sites were located on nine woods of which the biggest one was 1340 ha and the smallest one was 15 ha. Bird communities were censused by point counts method at each site on breeding season in 1994. In each site 20m×20m quadrat was established for vegetation survey. In each quadrat all plant species observed were recorded with their coverage. Our results showed that species composition of bird communities changed with that of vegetation. Based on the species composition of bird, the 100 sites were classified into four site groups namely, Group A to D. Based on the species composition of plant, vegetation of the 100 sites were also classified into four vegetation types namely, Type 1 to 4. Most sites of bird Groups A and D were corresponded with ones of vegetation Types 1 and 4, respectively. Short tailed Bush Warbler Cettia squameiceps and Japanese White-eye Zosterops japonicus were characteristically recorded in vegetation Type 1. At the sites of vegetation Type 1 Qurcus cerrata and Styrax japonica were dominant in the tree layer and there were dense shrub layers composed with some evergreen species. Some bird species which are prefer to grassland or thin forest habitat were characteristically recorded in vegetation Type 4 which is lack of shrub layers.

Bird communities on the 20 fragmented woodlots in a suburban area were surveyed in the Tokorozawa City, Central Japan, to analyze the factors that influenced the distribution of birds. Our results showed that woodlot area is an important predictor of the number of individuals and the species richness of birds in each woodlot. Based on the species composition of birds in wintering season, the fragmented woodlots were classified into four types by TWINSPAN: those are core woodlots, woodlots surrounding core ones, isolated and small woodlots, and isolated and middle-sized woodlots. By canonical discriminant analysis, it was indicated that the connectivity between woodlots and the vegetation structure are also important factors influencing bird communities. The necessity of controlling these factors for avian conservation was pointed out.

Species composition and vegetation structure of Quercus serrata woodlots were surveyed in the western part of Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, by line transect method. Forty transects were placed in 17 woodlots. Possible ways of succession of Q. serrata woodlots were discussed. No apparent differences in species composition were observed in the overstory of the studied woodlots; Q. serrata and Stylax japonica were dominant in the upper tree layer and in the lower tree layer, respectively. In the shrub layer, a large number of individuals of Q. myrsinaefolia, which is considered to be a dominant species of the potential natural vegetation of the studied area, was observed. Chamaecyparis obtusa, that is an evergreen coniferous tree species and is said to have been introduced artificially into the studied woodlots, was also recorded abundantly in the shrub layer. It appears that both Q. myrsinaefolia and C. obtusa can be dominant in future.

都市近郊に残存する樹林地において,ダミーの卵を入れた人工巣を設置して卵が捕食される状況を調査し,樹林地における捕食圧の空間的なパターンを明らかにすることを試みた.調査は,東京都と埼玉県の境に位置する狭山丘陵の比較的大規模な樹林地とその周辺の孤立樹林地5ヵ所の計6ヵ所で行った.樹林地では,周囲から侵入してくる捕食者によって,林縁付近においては被捕食率が高くなることが予測されたが,林縁からの距離と被捕食率の間には統計的に有意な相関は認められなかった.また,面積の小さな樹林地では被捕食率が高いことが予測されたが,比較的大規模な樹林地でもっとも被捕食率が高く,その他の孤立樹林地と有意な差を示した.最も面積の小さい樹林地で捕食率は最低であった.生息密度の高さからハシブトガラスが主な巣の捕食者であると考えられるが,ハシブトガラスの密度は狭山丘陵の樹林地で最も高く,またハシブトガラスは樹林地周辺に限らず樹林地内部でも多数観察された.このことから,鳥類の巣における捕食は,主な捕食者の樹林地内外の分布状況によって大きな影響を受けていることが示唆される.

We studied relationships between bird communities and vegetation structure on isolated woodlots in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, Central Japan. Twenty-four sites were located on two isolated woodlots of which ones were 14.5 ha and 7.8 ha, respectively. On wintering season in 1994 bird communities were censused for 20 minutes by point counts method in each site. In each site two 40m long transects and one 50×2m quadrat were established for vegetation survey. Vegetation structure and composition were recorded at 40 points (spaced at 2m intervals) along these lines and basal area of woody plant species (>1.5m) was recorded in the quadrat. Our results showed that vegetation cover density was found to correlate with the bird species richness on wintering season. Based on the species composition of bird, 24 sites were classified into four types namely, type A to D. On type B and D Bush Warbler Cettia diphone and Black-faced Bunting Emberiza spodocephala were characteristically recorded. Vegetation cover density in shrub and herb layers on type B and D sites was significantly higher than that on type A and C sites. Type A had poorest species richness in all types. Vegetation cover density on type A sites was significantly lower than that on type C sites. On type B sites Japanese Green Woodpecker Picas awokera was characteristically recorded. The total basal area of dead trees on type B sites was larger than that on type D sites, however the difference was not significant.

Winter Bird Banding in Wintering Season 1995-96 in the Sayama Hills, Central Japan

From November 1995 to early April 1996, 376 individuals were banded in an extensive forest and two isolated woodlots in the Sayama Hills, Central Japan. Each captured individual was fitted with a numbered metal ring and celluloid colored ring. A large number of individuals (15 or more) were banded for Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker Dendrocopos kizuki, Brown-eared Bulbul Hypsipetes amaurotis, Red-flanked Bluetail Tarsiger cyanurus, Pale Thrush Turdus pallidus, Japanese Bush Warbler Cettia diphone, Varied Tit Parus varius, Great Tit Parus major, Japanese White-eye Zosterops japonicus and Black-faced Bunting Emberiza spodocephala. Pale Thrush, Varied Tit and Japanese White-eye were captured more frequently in the extensive forest than in the isolated woodlots, while Great Tit and Black-faced Bunting were captured more frequently in the woodlots. The number of the captured individuals took the maximum in January, perhaps because fruits of Eurya japonica, a typical shrub species favored by most birds in the study area, were a vailable during this month. Several movements of Varied Tit and Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus within the study area were observed. A Long-tailed Tit moved from one of the isolated woodlots to the other (a distance of about 100 m). Sixty of the 376 banded individuals were recaptured at the same banding site. Recapture ratios of Japanese Bush Warbler, Pale Thrush and Red-flanked Bluetail, which frequent the shrub layer, were very high. On the other hand, although a large number of Great Tit and Japanese White-eye were banded, recapture ratios for these two species were lower. These results suggest that during the wintering season, the former three species tend to settle in a restricted area, while the later two species tend to move about over a wide range of forest habitat.

A Procedure of Ecological Data Analysis for Landscape Planning

For the conservation of biota, it is important to analyze ecological data and to make the landscape planning based on this analysis. We propose a procedure of ecological data analysis for landscape planning. The procedure is as follows: 1) Classification of grid cell which are the units of ecological data sampling, based on species composition resemblance by multivariate analysis. 2) Detection of the environmental factors affecting ecological communities. 3) Determination of the major habitat and selection of the sites where more detail survey and analysis are needed. To test the validity of the procedure, two sets of grid cell data of avifauna in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture were analyzed. The results of classification and discriminant analysis indicated the importance of the Sayama Hills, the Lake Sayama-ko, and some fragmented woodlots as the major habitat of birds. And several sites could be selected for the detail survey and analysis. By the results we are convinced of the validity of this analysis method.

The relation between wildbirds distribution and land use pattern was analyzed in the Sayama City, Saitama Pref., and the factors which influenced the avifauna were discussed. In this study multivariate methods based on grid cell data were used. Our results showed that avian species were classified into three categories, those are forest species, riparian species, and species occurring between forest and urban area, and that the species richness of forest or riparian species positivery correlated with each habitat area. It appeared that Species belonging to the third category utilized several types of habtat. From the viewpoint of avian conservation, the area of the Sayama City was divided into several parts based on the avifauna and land use should be the key of ecological management.
