Personal information management practices among the general public: analysis of questionnaire survey results in U.S. and Japan

Purpose: Personal information management (PIM) has evolved with advances in information technology. This study focused on how ordinary people use various technologies and tools for PIM practice in daily tasks. Design/methodology/approach: A web-based questionnaire survey was presented to 3,278 individuals in the United States and Japan between January and February 2022. The survey included 35 items for PIM activities assigned to three elements – task, format and management level – and three items for demographic data. Findings: Descriptive analysis showed that the use of digital format exceeded that of paper format in PIM activities. However, the paper format was preferred for certain tasks and among older age groups. In terms of the management level, retrieving information without management was the most frequent. Hierarchical clustering identified six behavioral types of PIM activities: omnivorous, selective, early adopters, conservatism, minimalist and no PIM. The conservatism cluster mainly used the paper format, whereas the no PIM cluster had almost no PIM activity. This demonstrates the diversity in the adoption of PIM practices. Originality/value: This study provides a snapshot of the current state of PIM practices when digital tools are commonly accessible and categorizes the PIM practices of ordinary people in the two countries. The results indicated that some people tend to retrieve information on specific tasks without managing it in advance. Moreover, the rising use of generative AI has the potential to fundamentally change PIM practices. This study suggests that examining the effect of information technology on PIM practices could be an important topic for the future.

This study focuses on the significant role played by reusing datasets in promoting open science. This study reported on the process of developing dataset reuse pattern categories and verified that these categories could be used to identify the role of reusing datasets. Articles that cited the biomedical dataset of the Framingham Cohort were included in the sample. Two annotators assigned categories to the samples by checking titles, journal names, author information, purpose, description of the dataset, and statements of data in the body of the articles; 11 categories were identified. The analysis of the sample articles with assigned categories indicated that this category set can contribute to verifying the increasing diversity of reuse patterns, expanding research areas, and contributing to data-driven research by reusing data. This study serves as a testament to the advantages of data reuse and inspires researchers to consider the impacts of data sharing practices.

While data sharing has received research interest in recent times, its real status remains unclear, owing to its ambiguous concept. To understand the current status of data sharing, this study examined primary reuse, data integration, and dataset release as the actual practices of data sharing. A total of 963 articles, chosen from those published in 2018 and registered in the Web of Science global citation database, were manually checked. Existing data were reused in the mode of data integration (13.3%) as frequently as they were for the mode of primary reuse (12.1%). Dataset release was the least common mode (9.0%). The results show the variation in data sharing and indicate the need for standardization of data description in articles based on thorough registration and expansion in public data archives to close the loop that results in the virtuous cycle of research data.

The adaption of data sharing is an important process in open science. Prior studies pertaining to data sharing have focused on the data release; however, data reuse is also an important aspect. Although the advantages of data reuse have not yet been demonstrated, they have been expressed in different fields. We selected the most cited datasets in the Data Citation Index – the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) and the Framingham Cohort – and identified articles that reused them to measure the disciplinary diversity among these articles, as well as advantage in terms of citation counts. Particularly, we identified 2,919 articles that reused the Add Health dataset published in 1,702 resources, indicating high disciplinary diversity. Articles reused that the Framingham Cohort dataset had higher citation counts than those in the journal Circulation from 2004 to 2010. Despite our limited analysis, these results indicate the advantages of data reuse.

【目的】情報メディアは，従来所有して利用することが一般的であった。しかし近年，経済活動における多様なサービスの展開，デジタル環境が進む中，アクセスをベースとする利用行動が広まってきている。本研究では，小説，教養書や専門書，漫画，音楽という4種類の情報メディアに関して，先行研究における包括的所有概念の機能構成が断片化するという考え方に基づき，各情報メディアの購入，借出，サブスクリプションといった利用行動を「所有」「準所有」「アクセス1」「アクセス2」「アクセス3」の5類型に整理した上で，現在どの利用が中心になされているのかを明らかにし，利用傾向によって回答者を類型化し，各グループを特徴づけることを目的とする。【方法】日本国内の1,030名（男女，年齢均等割付）を対象にオンラインパネル調査を実施した。設問は情報メディアの利用に関する30項目，情報メディアの志向に関する5項目，情報メディアの利用頻度に関する3項目，機器の所持と利用に関する2項目，性格特性に関する10項目である。情報メディアの利用に関する30項目の回答結果に基づいた階層的クラスタリングによって得られた樹形図に基づき，7クラスタを同定した。【結果】情報メディアの利用に関する質問30項目のうち27項目で，「全くしない／知らない／わからない」という回答が50%以上を占めていた。一方，YouTubeなどの無料動画サイトでの音楽鑑賞を「非常によくする／よくする」と回答した者は41.9%だった。各メディアの利用状況に基づき，情報メディアの利用の少ない5クラスタに対して，それぞれ「YouTubeのみ利用」「非利用」「図書館利用」「音楽利用（定額）」「所有」と名付けた。情報メディアの利用の多い2クラスタに対して，「全メディア積極利用」「積極利用（アクセス3重視）」と名付けた。これらのクラスタに関して，情報メディアの利用頻度，性格傾向などの特徴を整理した。

Purpose: Information behavior has changed in recent years following the increase in economic activities based on access. Five types of information media use were categorized based on a previous study of ownership: ownership, quasi-ownership, and access types 1, 2, and 3. To clarify the current trends in media use, we conducted a survey of the current uses of four types of media: novels, nonfiction books, comics, and music. The respondents were categorized based on their information media use. Methods: An online panel survey was conducted in Japan with 1,030 participants who were counterbalanced by gender and age. The questions consist of 30 items related to media use, 5 related to physical media orientation, 3 related to frequency of media use, 2 related to possession and use of computer devices, and 10 related to personality. Results: Of the 30 questions on media use, more than half of the respondents answered "never/ don't know/no idea" to 27 questions. However, 41.9% of the respondents answered that they "very often/often" listen to music on free online video-sharing platforms such as YouTube. Seven clusters were identified based on hierarchical clustering from the answers for media use. The five clusters that indicated less use of information media were: "only YouTube," "nonuser," "library user," "music subscription user," and "ownership." The two respondent clusters that used information media frequently were: "active user of all media" and "active user (mainly access type 3)." The characteristics of the clusters were discussed.

The purpose of this research is to identify topics in library and information science (LIS) using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and to visualize the knowledge structure of the field as consisting of specific topics and its transition from 2000–2002 to 2015–2017. The full text of 1648 research articles from five peer-reviewed representative LIS journals in these two periods was analyzed by using LDA. A total of 30 topics in each period were labeled based on the frequency of terms and the contents of the articles. These topics were plotted on a two-dimensional map using LDAvis and categorized based on their location and characteristics in the plots. Although research areas in some forms were persistent with which discovered in previous studies, they were crucial to the transition of the knowledge structure in LIS and had the following three features: (1) The Internet became the premise of research in LIS in 2015–2017. (2) Theoretical approach or empirical work can be considered as a factor in the transition of the knowledge structure in some categories. (3) The topic diversity of the five core LIS journals decreased from the 2000–2002 to 2015–2017.

Data sharing has been emphasized in scientific research in the era of open science; however, the concept of data sharing is ambiguous, and the real situation of data sharing is unclear. One reason is that most studies focused on researchers' recognition, motivation, and other contributing factors and did not thoroughly discuss the actual practice of data sharing for preparing research articles. To explicitly understand the current status of data sharing, the authors considered and investigated primary reuse, data integration, and data release distinctively as the actual practices of data sharing. A total of 237 articles published in 2018 and registered in the Web of Science global citation database were manually checked. Unlike the scarcity of data reuse (8.0%) or data release (5.1%), existing data were most frequently reused in the form of data integration (20.7%). The result implies that further studies on detailed data reuse are required to clarify the concept of data sharing.

<p>　2011-2018 年に38 か国で実施された「国際成人力調査（PIAAC）」のオープンデータを用い，デジタルスキルに影響する要因の比較を行った。分析にはデジタルスキルを反映すると考えられるIT を活用した問題解決能力（PSTRE）の課題の正答数（25 か国15,702 件）を用いた。分析手順は以下の通りである。1．各国のPSTRE の課題の正答率比較，2．背景調査から選択した63 設問（日常でのメディア利用等）の因子分析，3．選択された各因子の因子得点と年齢，性別，学歴を説明変数，各回答者のPSTRE 正答数を目的変数とした回帰分析（25 か国全体，日本，北欧3 か国の3 グループに実施）。主な結果として，課題ごとの正答率および課題の正答に影響する要因は国や地域ごとに異なることが明らかになった。ただし，年齢と学歴はいずれの国や地域でも共通してPSTRE に影響を与え，性別は日本，北欧3 か国では有意ではなかった。</p>

Copyright © 2018 by Association for Information Science and Technology The topic modeling approach can indicate hidden relationships between articles in a particular academic discipline. This study aims to examine topics in library and information science (LIS) using the latent Dirichlet allocation method. From representative five journals, 1,648 full-text articles were analyzed. We labeled 30 identified topics based on the top 10 highly weighted terms for each topic, title, and body of articles. From the topic mapping, commonly used methods and shift of research issues in LIS were found.

© 2016 ASIS & T In today's digital age, daily reading may be becoming digital reading. To understand this possible shift from reading print media to reading digital media, we investigated reading behavior for 11 media and reading preferences between print and digital in different circumstances. In August 2012, an online survey was used to inquire about the reading behavior and preference of 1,755 participants, ranging in age from 18 to 69 years. The participants contained equal numbers of men and women from five age brackets. Our main finding was that approximately 70% of total reading time was spent on digital media and that preferences favored print media. Cluster analysis of reading time by media was used to categorize respondents into eight clusters, and a second cluster analysis on stated preference (digital or print) yielded six clusters. The correspondence analysis between reading behavior clusters and preference clusters revealed that there is a mismatch between reading behavior and stated preference for either print or digital media.

© 2017 ACM. Identifying factors that influence information retrieval skills can help us to understand search behavior and show what skills are required to conduct efficient and accurate searches. This paper describes a study in which relationship factors that influence the information retrieval skills of a cohort of 1,551 Japanese Internet users are investigated using a combination of survey methods, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. Our factor analysis confirms the importance of three sub-skill groups that are similar to sub-skill groups that have been previously reported (i.e., formal Internet skills, operational skills, and assessment skills) and indicates the importance of a fourth group (which we call "search strategy skills"). Our structural equation model incorporates two novel factors that have not previously been studied in this context: critical thinking ability, and self-efficacy for the Internet and information retrieval. The results show that critical thinking ability and self-efficacy positively influence the information retrieval skill level, and age is found to be a negative influence. Contrary to previously reported results, little independent effect is seen from educational attainment.

<p>現代における学会発表の位置づけを考察することを目的として，ウェブサイトに対する事例調査とメールによる質問紙調査を実施した。54 学会を対象とした事例調査からは，研究集会の定期開催，開催事務局への依存と前例を踏襲する傾向が分かった。質問紙調査では世界中の285 学会からの回答を分析した。その結果，1）自然科学・医学系ではポスター発表も採用，2）ほとんどで査読を実施，3）人文学・社会科学系では配布資料・口頭のみでの発表も認められていること，4）発表資料の電子形式での記録，提供はあまりなされていないこと，などが明らかになった。以上から，研究者のインフォーマルな交流の場としての研究集会という認識は大きく変化していないこと，学会発表は研究集会の一部と見なされていること，発表を研究成果として独立して蓄積し，広くアクセスできるようにする意識が弱いことが示唆された。</p>

<p>本研究では，van Deursen らの「デジタルスキル」を基礎に，従来の情報検索の専門的なスキルを組み込んだウェブ環境における情報検索スキルの現状を明らかにすることを目的とする質問紙調査を行った。2014 年8 月にオンライン調査を実施し，1,551 名から回答を得た。その結果，ウェブ環境で検索を行う人々は，（1）ブール演算子などの高度な情報検索技法は用いない，（2）ウェブ上の情報の形式は理解している，（3）検索語の選定に対する意識は高い，（4）一定の評価方針のもとに複数の検索結果を閲覧する，（5）インターネットから恩恵を受けていると感じている，ことが明らかになった。階層的クラスタリングにより回答者を8 クラスタに分割し，高い情報検索スキルを持つクラスタを特定した。この高能力者群は，比較的若く，男性が多く，学歴が高く，批判的思考能力と自己認識が高かった。高能力者群は全てのスキルの平均得点が最も高いが，検索技法に関するスキルのみ得点は大幅に低かった。</p>

© 2014 IEEE. This paper highlights the results of a survival survey and life span study of 10 million web pages, mainly in Japanese, that were collected for NTCIR-3 (web task) in 2001. To calculate web page life span, metadata was collected from Internet Archive's Wayback Machine via Memento. The life span study showed that the average life span of a web page is 1,132.1 days.

In recent years, asteroid exploration by surface explorers has been studied actively. Conventional rovers can move under microgravity environment, but the rovers have not considered thermal control. This paper proposes a novel mobility mechanism for a rover under microgravity environment along with temperature control. The effectiveness of the proposed rover is investigated by simulations and microgravity experiments.

This paper highlights the results of a survival survey and life span study of 10 million web pages, mainly in Japanese, that were collected for NTCIR-3 (web task) in 2001. To calculate web page life span, metadata was collected from Internet Archive's Wayback Machine via Memento. The life span study showed that the average life span of a web page is 1,132.1 days.

ウェブ上に存在するPDFファイル群から学術論文を自動的に判定する手法の開発を目的とした。まず,学術論文の構成要素と構造がどのように発達してきたかを調査した。英語と日本語の学術論文1,172件に対して,それらが顕れているかを調査した。その結果,論文は共通した構成要素を有しており,見出しを持つ論文のうち40%近くがIMRAD形式またはそれに近い構造を採っていた。次に,これらの結果をもとに,学術論文を自動的に判定するためのルールを構築した。ウェブ上から無作為に収集した英語と日本語のPDFファイル集合を用いて判定性能を実験したところ,ランダムフォレストによる判定器を用いた場合,F値は英語集合では0.74,日本語集合では0.53であった。これらの結果から,本研究で用いたアプローチにより構築した判定ルールにより,ウェブ上に存在するPDFファイル群から学術論文を自動的に判定できる可能性が示唆された。

A research project was conducted in which proper JAPAN/MARC bibliographic records for 158 major Japanese classical works were identified manually, since existing records contain little information about works included in the resources. This article reports on the detailed method used for work identification, including selecting works, obtaining the bibliographic records to be judged, and building the judgment criteria. The results of the work identification process are reported along with average numbers that indicate the characteristics of certain classics. The necessity of manual identification was justified through an evaluation of searches by author and/or title information in a conventional retrieval system. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ウェブの規模が増大するにつれ,検索エンジンからアクセスできない状態,すなわち深層ウェブも増大していることへの関心が高まっている。マッカウンら(2006)とハーゲドーンとサンテッリ(2008)は,深層ウェブの規模をOAI-PMHを用いて収集した機関リポジトリに収録された文献のメタデータを用いて計測した。本研究では,2009年9月に,先行研究の手法を応用し,日本の機関リポジトリから収集した全文PDFファイルのURLを用いて,より大規模に深層ウェブの比率を計測した。その結果,Google, Yahoo!, Bingの3つの検索エンジンから検索できるウェブは72.0%に過ぎず,28.0%が深層ウェブとなっていることが分かった。1つの検索エンジンでは,最高でもGoogleの53.2%であった。また,PDFファイルとURLの特徴の調査から,動的なURLや長いURLが深層ウェブとなる要因であることが分かった。

Purpose: This paper seeks to clarify the research trend of library and information science (LIS) in Japan from 1970 to 2009. Methods: Of all the articles published from 1970 to 2009 in Library and Information Science and Journal of Japan Society of Library and Information Science, 826 research articles were examined. For each article, (1) authors, (2) topics, (3) research methods, and (4) the use of theories were analyzed. For (1), the number of authors of each article and the first author's affiliation and occupation were examined. Topics were classified into 14 LIS topics and these topics were further classified into "library science" and "information science". Empirical research methods were further divided into "data collection method" and "data analysis method". The number of research articles and the transition of the number of pages were also investigated. Results: Our findings indicate that in the LIS field over the last 40 years in Japan, (1) the number of authors whose affiliation is "university" has increased, (2) the number of "information science" articles has gradually decreased, and the majority of articles are now about "library science", and (3) the proportion of empirical research methods has increased. There were no major changes or distinctive trends in the topics discussed by articles. Due to the adoption of a strict peer-review system in both journals, the number of research articles decreased from the 1990s to 2000s; however, the number of articles has increased in recent years due to the increase in the number of graduate students and the enhancement of research grants in the LIS field.

Our research goal is to develop a search engine for open access to academic papers. English and Japanese test sets were built for detection of academic papers from 20,000 PDF files in each language using five annotators. Six classifiers were trained using similar features for each language. We report F1 of 0.74 for English and 0.54 for Japanese and argue that similar features could easily be generated for other languages as well. © 2011 Authors.

【目的】本論文の目的は，学術論文の著者，主題，研究方法，理論の使用を分析することにより，1970年から2009年までの日本の図書館情報学の研究状況を明らかにすることである。【方法】対象とした雑誌は，査読制度を採用しているLibrary and Information Scienceと『日本図書館情報学会誌』（『図書館学会年報』）である。1970年から2009年の間の掲載論文のうち，投稿論文826篇を調査対象とした。各論文に対して，①著者，②主題，③研究方法，④理論の使用の分析を行った。著者に関しては，論文ごとの著者数，第一著者の所属機関，職業を集計した。主題は14に区分し，さらに図書館学と情報学にまとめた。研究方法は，最初に6アプローチに分類した後，実証的研究のみデータ集計方法とデータ分析方法を調査した。また，年別の論文数やページ数の推移を集計した。【結果】日本の図書館情報学論文ではこの40年間に，（1）大学院生を含め大学に所属する著者の増加，（2）情報学は一時多かったが，次第に減少傾向にあり，図書館学が再び中心となっている，（3）実証的方法を採用する論文が増加している，などの傾向があった。しかし，主題について大きな変化はなかった。全体の論文数は，1990年代から2000年代後半にかけて低下したが，現在は，増加傾向にある。前者の原因は，両誌の厳格な査読制度の採用にあり，後者の原因は，大学院生の増加や研究助成制度の充実にあると考えられる。

Investigating the current status of the deep web is important for both the general public and researchers. Several deep web surveys have recently been conducted on institutional repositories (IRs). We calculate the extent of the deep web based on the content of searchable IRs in Japan, but using a more appropriate interval and exhaustive search with three major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and Bing). The deep web is roughly 30% of major search engines' coverage.

【目的】近年，テレビニュースの娯楽化と，テレビニュースにおけるテロップの濫用が指摘されている。テレビニュースにおけるテロップは，本来，情報の重複性による内容理解の向上を意図されている。本研究は，眼球運動の測定と内容に関する確認テストとによって，ニュースの視聴に対するテロップの情報重複性の効果を明らかにすることを目的としている。【方法】ニュースの内容理解に対する情報の重複性の効果を検証するために実験をおこなった。実験は，1）ニュース視聴時の眼球運動の測定と2）ニュースの内容に関する確認テストの2過程からなる。22人の大学生と大学院生とが実験に参加した。実験参加者を，テロップがあるニュースをみるグループと，テロップのないニュースをみるグループに分けた。実験では，参加者は三つのニュースを視聴し，視聴中の眼球運動を記録した。その後，確認テストによって，ニュース内容の理解を測定した。【結果】眼球運動測定の結果から，テロップのあるニュースを見たグループの参加者の眼球の動きは，テロップの出現によく反応していることがわかった。確認テストの結果から，テロップのあるグループの参加者は，いくつかの問題で正解率が有意に向上していた。ここからテレビニュースの内容理解に情報重複性の効果があることがわかった。しかし，いくつかの問題は，テロップによって内容を誤解する可能性があることを示唆した。

Purpose: In recent years, the problems of tabloidization of TV news programs and abuse of telops in TV news have grown. Telops in TV news were originally intended to improve understanding of the contents by introducing an information redundancy effect This study examined by experiment the information redundancy effect of telops when watching TV news. Methods: The experiment included two components: 1) tracking the eye movements of subjects when watching TV news, and 2) examining the degree to which the subjects understood the news contents. As subjects, 22 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the experiment The participants were divided into two groups: a telop group who watched TV news with telops, and a no-telop group who watched the news without any telops. In the experiment the differences of eye movements and understanding of the news contents were measured and analyzed. Results: The results from eye movement tracking showed that eye movements in the telop group tended to react sensitively to the appearance of telops. Also, the analysis of understanding showed that the correct answer rates of the telop group were higher than those of the no-telop group for several of the questions. Thus, information redundancy affected the understanding of TV new contents in the experiment However, telops induced some misunderstanding of some questions.

Eye tracking was used to analyze which elements of which screens were viewed by users searching an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Eye tracking data was obtained for 32 participants performing a known-item search task. The results show that more than 30% of participants did not make effective use of screens offering additional details, and that participants who did, and found the correct answer, gazed at specific screen elements more frequently than participants who gave incorrect answers. Purpose: In recent years, "a work" is attracting attention as an entity for information retrieval. This paper investigates associations of works which are called "bibliographic family" represented in the Japanese library catalog. Methods: To investigate bibliographic families in the Japanese library catalog, a survey was conducted using a random sample from J-BISC. Research questions were: 1) what proportion of works in the Japanese library catalog have derivative works, 2) how populous each bibliographic family is, 3) how frequently each type of derivative relationship appears, and 4) whether there are unique characteristics of bibliographic relationships in Japan compared with studies from other countries. From J-BISC, 669 works that had been recorded up to January 2005 were extracted as the sample. To search for members of bibliographic families, NDL-OPAC and Webcat Plus was used. To investigate the characteristics of bibliographic families of works in the Japanese library catalog, the results of previous studies were compared and examined. Results: The survey results show that 1) 25.9% of works in the sample have derivative works, 2) the average size of bibliographic families in the sample is 1.80, and 3) successive relationships account for 63.6% of all types of derivative relationships. Based on these results, networks of bibliographic families really exist, and so it is valid to use the links to improve the library catalog. From a comparison with five previous studies in the U.S. and Slovenia, the phenomenon of works which are called bibliographic families is free from locality and language, and shows "universality.".

日本の図書館目録における書誌的家系

【目的】近年，情報検索の対象として，「著作」への関心が高まっている。本稿の目的は，日本の図書館目録に現れる著作における著作のつながり，「書誌的家系」の実態を明らかにすることである。【方法】日本の図書館目録に現れる書誌的家系を明らかにするために，J-BISCからの著作の標本を用いた調査を行った。具体的な調査課題として，1）日本の図書館目録に現れる著作のなかで派生をもつ割合はどれくらいか，2）書誌的家系の大きさはどれくらいか，3）それぞれの派生の関係種別の出現頻度はどれくらいか，4）先行研究と比較して日本の図書館目録に現れる書誌的家系に固有の特徴はあるのか，の四つを設定した。2005年1月までにJ-BISCに収録されたデータを標本の抽出枠として，669件の著作を含んだ標本を構築した。標本に含まれた各著作に対して，NDL-OPACと，Webcat Plusとを用いて，書誌的家系を構成する著作を探索した。また日本の図書館目録に現れる書誌的家系の特徴を明らかにするために，先行研究の結果との比較・分析を行った。【結果】調査から，J-BISCに現れる書誌的家系は1）25.9%に派生著作が存在すること，2）平均的な大きさは1.80で，小規模な書誌的家系が多いこと，3）派生の関係種別の63.6が継続派生で単純な家系が多いことがわかった。この調査から，日本の図書館目録においても，書誌的家系のつながりが存在し，それらを図書館目録に導入することの有用性が明らかになった。これまで欧米で行われてきた五つの先行研究との比較から，本調査での結果がこれまでの書誌ユーティリティを用いた調査と同様の傾向を示しており，書誌的家系という著作の現象が，地域や言語に縛られない，「普遍性」をもつことが明らかになった。

本研究は読書の行為に焦点を当て「読書とはいかなる行為であるのか」を明らかにすることを目的としている。既存の読書研究は,読書の対象や,児童や生徒に対する読書指導といった側面に焦点を当てるものが多かった。これに対して本研究は,個人の行う読書は様々な次元からなる行為であると考え,成人を対象として読書の次元を明らかにしようと試みた。20代から40代の計29名を対象にフォーカス・グループ・インタビューを5回実施し,発言を分析した結果,読書とは,対象(何を読むのか)に加えて,志向(なぜ・何のために読むのか),行動(どのように読むのか),作用(読んだ結果何を得るのか),場所(どこで読むのか)の五つの次元から成る行為であることが明らかになった。特に対象は,物理的媒体,ジャンル,内容評価といった観点からみられる可能性が示唆された。

【目的】図書館業務における研究成果の活用と研究の実践を促進するエビデンス・ベースト・ライブラリアンシップ（EBL）の適用可能性と問題点を検討する。【方法】日本の雑誌論文100論文に対してEBLで挙げられている根拠のレベル，課題，主題領域を調査し集計した。【成果】日本の図書館情報学論文はEBLの根拠のレベルでは，事例研究と専門家の意見が大半を占め，EBLのレベルの高いとされるサミングアップは2件にとどまった。また，EBLで示されている三つの課題にあてはまらず，課題のない論文が30%と多かった。主題領域にも偏りがみられた。しかし，EBLの枠組みを検討すると，EBLがエビデンス・ベースト・メディシン（EBM）の影響を強く受けているため，図書館情報学文献に適用するには困難が多いことが確認された。

目次と帯を用いた図書の自動分類

書名だけでなく目次や帯情報を用いて,図書を日本十進分類法の分類カテゴリに自動分類する実験を行った。分類手法には,相対出現率と相互情報量にもとづく重み付けとSupport Vector Machine (SVM)による手法を用いた。「BOOK」データベースとNII-CATデータを統合した24,000件を用いて学習させたところ,重み付けに相対出現率と相互情報量を用いた場合は,書名に加えて目次と帯情報を用いた場合の効果が認められた。また,機械学習手法よりも,統計的手法のほうが有効であった。分類カテゴリの分野ごとの再現率を調べたところ,分野によって再現率に大きな差があった。さらに,帯情報などが有効な分野もあり,書名,目次,帯を用いた効果が分野ごとに異なることが明らかになった。
