近年來台灣公民社會的蓬勃發展，激起了更多人對政治事務的關注，以及對政治知識的興趣。作為研究與實踐政治學的我們，深感自己有責任將政治學轉化成更易懂的語言，走入大眾的生活裡。我們決定成立這個平台來推廣政治學的科普文章，希望讓更多人得以理解政治學的分析視角，進而依此關心、共同思辨台灣的政治狀況。我們期待能藉由此種方式為台灣的民主深化盡一份心力。

　　這是「菜市場政治學」共同編輯群，在這個共筆部落格的官網上對自己的定義與期許。他們提到自己如何受到《二十一世紀資本論》作者皮凱提所啟發：「社會科學家，和所有的公民及知識分子一樣，都應該加入公共議題的辯論，而不能只滿足於提出一些抽象的原則，例如民主、正義、和平。社會科學家必須對於特定的制度和政策選取立場並為其辯護，不管是福利國家、稅制，以及其他公共議題。每個人也都應該參與在這個過程，這個世界並不是區分為政治菁英和平民的對立，每個人該做的事也不只是每幾年去投一次票這樣而已。」

　　為了讓更多公民了解自己應該知道什麼、可以做些什麼，「菜市場政治學」的題目包山包海，上自國家認同、選舉制度、政黨與政治人物，下至政治參與、投票行為、民意調查，旁及中國因素。既然今年11月24日就要舉行九合一地方公職人員選舉，因此「菜市場政治學」決定以此為主軸，發行第一卷〈選舉專號〉來為讀者展開看待選舉的方法。正如上文皮凱提教授所言，面對公共事務，每位公民該做的事，不應該只是每幾年去投一次票，這樣簡單的動作而已。
