Dragonfly and damselfly (Odonata) species were surveyed from May to October 2002 on 38 small irrigation ponds in the north part of Awaji Island. The investigation was conducted nine times on each pond. Totally 1568 individuals of 28 species were recorded for six months. We selected nine species recorded more than 40 individuals and analyzed the relationships of individual number of these species with environmental factors, including conductivity, NO2-, NO3-, NH4-, PO43-, COD, surrounding land uses within 50 meters from the edge of pond, the number of aquatic water plant species, and autocovariates explaining spatial autocorrelation, using Generalized Linear Models (GLM). The result showed that NO3-, COD, surrounding grassland, woodland and the number of water plant species were critical factors for the distribution of some Odonata species.

種の保存とランドスケープ－21世紀における自然と人との共生のあり方を考える。2008年には「種の保存とランドスケープ」というテーマに関わる大きな出来事が3つあった。一つは生物多様性基本法が6月に施行されたこと、次は国土形成計画（全国計画）が7月に閣議決定されたこと、そして3つめは、9月にトキの試験放鳥が佐渡島で実施されたことである。この3つの出来事が2008年にそろったことは偶然とも言えるが、2001年の環境省の発足以降、2002年の自然再生推進法制定、自然公園法改正、鳥獣保護法改正、2004年の外来生物法制定、2006年に再びの鳥獣保護法の改正、そして2007年11月に第三次生物多様性国家戦略が策定されるなど、近年種の保存とランドスケープを結びつけるような施策が展開されている。歴史。

Habitat estimation of Asiatic black bear is considered highly significant from the perspective of effective habitat management, because this species is known both as a destructive animal as well as an umbrella species. In this study, we developed a predictive model for the probability of occurrences of Asiatic black bear using environmental indices. Based on this research, the optimal logistic regression model was log(p/(1-p))=(-1.486e+01)+(7.335e-04)*x1+(9.470e-03)*x2. where x1 is the distance to small paths (m), x2 is the altitude (m), and p is a probability of occurrence of Asiatic black bear in this study area. This model is applicable for habitat management. Additional research will examine the application of this model to different local Asiatic black bear populations in other regions.

Possibility of using chip-mulchings made from pruned branches and leaves in the parks

In this paper, we conducted a field experiment on a large park which is located on the north part of Awaji Island, central Japan, in order to verify effects of mulching of wood chips made from pruned braches and leaves on 39 cherry trees (Cerasus × Kanzakura 'kawazu-zakura'). 39 trees were divided into three groups: wood chips were laid around 14 trees after grass removed, sand was laid around 15 trees after grass removed, and 10 trees were treated as control. SPAD value, photosynthetic rates for tree growth, and soil temperature and moisture were measured from the beginning of August to the middle of November. As a result, the average of soil temperature of tress with wood chips was significantly lower than ones of trees with sand and control trees. The averages of soil moisture of trees with wood chips and sand were significantly higher than one of control trees. Also, trees with wood chips and sand had significant higher SPAD values than control. The photosynthesis rate of trees with wood chips was less reduced than the others. These results showed that the multing of wood chips could keep trees healthy, because of maintaining the soil temperature and moisture.

Aquatic Plant Diversity in the Irrigation Ponds of a Terraced Paddy Field Area in Western Japan : the Relationship between Distribution and Environment

We investigated aquatic plant distribution and environmental factors in 38 irrigation ponds of four valleys of a terraced paddy field area in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture, western Japan. Sixteen species including two threatened and two exotic species were recorded in 24 ponds, and no species in the other ponds. The average number of species per pond was 1.7 (range, 0 to 8). There were few ponds with more species.   Although species number was not related to location of ponds within each valley, it was significantly different among valleys. The results of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) also showed no trends in species composition of ponds between and within four valleys. However, significant nestedness of aquatic plant communities was detected using “BINMATNEST”, and the threatened species occurred in ponds with more species. The results of Moran's I statistics of the present/absent data of Lemna aoukikusa and Potamogeton oxyphyllus showed the significant positive spatial autocorrelation within valleys for only the former species, of which populations were observed in surrounding paddy fields.   We analyzed the relationships of species number with environmental factors, including conductivity, NO2-, NO3-, NH4+, PO43- and mean water level, using generalized linear models (GLMs). The model with the lowest AIC included conductivity, NO3- and mean water level, and the latter two variables had significant effects on species number. Adding autocovariate explaining spatial autocorrelation slightly improved model fit, but its significant effect was not found. Both NO3- and mean water level varied among valleys in different way from species number, indicating that only each of the variables do not explain the difference in species number among valleys. The final GLM models explained 27.5 % of the variation in species number, suggesting other environmental factors may also be important.   The results of this study suggest that active conservation efforts and water management are necessary in order to maintain the species richness of ponds in our study area. Considering the nestedness of aquatic plant communities and occurrence of threatened species in ponds with more species, conservation of those ponds should have priority. Controlling the exotic species should also be important and indispensable.

A Biotope Type Mapping Procedure Suitable for Habitat Evaluation in Japanese Rural Areas

  Biotope (habitat) type maps are essential as base maps for land use planning and biodiversity conservation. Actual vegetation maps are often used as the base maps, though important information for biotope evaluation such as vegetation structure and anthropogenic land modification is not shown enough. We proposed a procedure of biotope type mapping for rural areas and drew a prototype map. We classified biotope types following German system of biotope classification in some part and also considering soil moisture of rice paddies in winter, bank modification of irrigation canals, vegetation management frequency in grasslands and density of woodland understory.

The Survey Method for Selecting the Index Species of Frogs and Toads to Evaluate the Habitat Quality in Rural Landscape

In this study, we tried selection the index species in frogs and toads, because it was necessary to verify the relation with the population density of the index species and the ecological location type in rural landscape planning. The fauna composition and seasonal changes in the number of frogs was investigated by visual encounter survey and audio strip survey in hilly area, northern Kanto in 2006. Two species, Rana japonica and R. porosa porosa, has been selected as the index species for evaluation of the habitat quality. And the evaluation by the calculation value of yearlings should be low validity, and use the calculation value of adults. The suitable investigation season of two species for quantitative survey was clarified. In addition, it was shown that the presence of R. rugosa was able to become indices of various frog species composition when limiting it to the environment where the rice field existed.
