From `life-time' employment to work-sharing: Fact findings and an estimation of labour demand for part-time workers in Japan

Japanese employment has been changing from the traditional patterns, `life-time commitment' to large scale firms, to more flexible but unstable working condition .Part-time workers increased 4.7% pa for this decade. They are mainly female workers with high education. Recently young part-time workers less educated have also increased quite rapidly about 2 times in proportion during 1990 and 2000. Behind these trends, Japan experienced new institutional arrangements, new types of entry, increasing differences of costs among employment status. Estimates of the elasticity of substitution between full and part-time workers suggest that this trend will continue, unless the large wage difference should vanish. We compiled the new data series for the estimation, and include a brief survey on the relevant researches of Japanese sources.

Price Stability and the Inter-industry Propagation of Stochastic Impulse: Formulating dynamic price equation and an application of the Langevin equation

Dynamic price equation has a feedback effect from the capital gain/loss of its user's cost of capital. Hayami[1993] developed the model which endogenously determines the capital goods prices, and this paper investigates more general characteristics of the system, and extends it into incorporating stochastic fluctuation due to the total factor productivity(TFP). The latter extension to stochastic system has been developed by Hayami [1999]. In a deterministic model, the system's stability depends on the degree of out-sourcing of capital goods, where relatively higher out-sourcing causes the system into saddle point equilibrium. This paper presents all the possible steady states in the dynamic price equation, and draws their phase portraits.

Bottom-up method is commonly used in developing life cycle inventories of investigated systems. In this method, inputs and outputs are listed up in a table of each estimated process, taking the relationships among the process into considertaion. Hence it has difficulties in allocating inputs and outputs to multiple products as well as retracing complicated repercussions among the systems. Here we describe the mathematical framework of the process-relational model.

ここでは，未来技術のCO2削減効果を評価する方法論的なフレームワークについて簡単にまとめておきたい．評価方法としてわれわれが主に利用しているのは，産業連関分析を利用したCO2の波及効果の計算である．技術の環境評価(Environmental Assessment)というと，多くの文献が示しているように計算のベースラインによっては評価の値が大きく異なることがありうる

農業生産活動の最大の特色は，自然生態系を生かして生産を行う点にある．しかし同時に，多くのエネルギー消費を伴う機械化や施設栽培化，化学肥料の投入などが一定の環境負荷を与えていることは否めない．地球環境問題への関心が高まるにつれ，農業生産活動が地球環境に及ぼす影響の客観的把握が求められるようになった．ここでは，数ある環境問題のなかで，近年特に注目が集まっている地球温暖化問題をとりあげ，農業生産活動による環境負荷を計測することを目的としている．具体的には，温暖化ガスとしてのCO2が農業生産活動によりどのくらい排出されるかを推計した．

Solar power generation, especially space solar power, is one of the most promising alternative technologies for reducing CO2 emissions. However its potential is not obvious, because the launching of satellites consumes rocket fuel, and because solar panel production also involves energy consumption. For this paper we calculated CO2 emissions through the life cycle of a Solar Power Satellite (SPS), which comprises production of rocket fuel, solar panels, construction of Rectenna (power receiving antenna), satellite and all equipment listed in the NASA/DOE Reference System. The calculation also includes indirect CO2 emissions estimated from 1990 Japanese Input-Output Tables broken down into 405 sectors. The baseline scenario shows that CO2 emissions from SPS per unit of energy generated, at 20g CO2 per kWh, is almost the same as from nuclear power systems at 22g CO2 per kWh, and much less than LNG-fired power generation at 631g CO2 per kWh, and coal-fired energy at 1,225g CO2 per kWh. Furthermore, the SPS-Breeder scenario (in which installed Solar Power Satellites supply electricity for producing further SPS units) shows significant improvement in CO2 emissions at only 11g per kWh. In spite of Japan's high dependence on nuclear power (which currently provides 32% of the total electricity supplied), electricity causes one fourth of Japan's total CO2 emissions. This paper suggests that the SPS is the most effective alternative technology for further CO2 reduction in electric power generation.
